Wheelchair Lifts for Passenger Ferries
A large government owned passenger ferry was in operation on the east coast of the United States. The ferry boat made numerous stops at small towns to load an unload passengers. Management of the ferry service wanted to provide a safe accessibility option for its wheelchair bound or disabled passengers.
Project Constraints:
• Access to the boat was at a height of 6’
• The wheelchair lift had to safely accommodate the motion of the boat
• The ferry boat made numerous stops along its route to drop off supplies and passengers, and to load new shipments and passengers.
The Solution
Adaptive provided an extended height Mobilift CX comes with additional stabilizers, a 72” long bridge ramp with integrated folding handrails and safety arms to span from the dock into the opening in the side of the boat. Additionally, there were 4 custom loops added to allow the ship’s crane to load and unload the lift.
The Outcome
The extended height Mobilift CX was able to reach to the 6’ opening height. The extended bridge ramp allowed the wheelchair user to roll from the lift right through the required door onto one of the lower decks in the boat. As they never knew when or where they were going to have a wheelchair passenger, they used the crane to lower the lift whenever needed.
